For the first time ever Global Forum on Modern Direct Democracy is heading to Eastern Europe! From 15 to 18 May 2024, the world's largest conference on direct democracy will convene in Bucharest, Romania. The Global Forum is being held in collaboration of Democracy International with the local host, Europuls.

The team of Direct Democracy Navigator will host an array of workshops throughout the Global Forum:

• Join Clara Egger and Raul Magni-Berton as they conduct the workshop "Campaigning for democracy: How to enshrine direct democracy in the constitution?". They will practical advices on how to enshrine DD institutions in constitutional frameworks based on our research as well as practical experiences of policy debates in three countries. Additionally, Raul Magni-Berton will be hosting a panel discussion on embeding direct democracy institutions in national constitutions.
• On Friday, 17 May, Kim Graves and Anna Proskurina will be hosting the “Direct Democracy 101: learning from scratch” workshop. During the workshop the participants will get a chance to dive into what is direct democracy and how these instruments are categorised according to Navigator topology and how the legal design of direct democracy tools can reveal a lot about the use of the instrument. Lastly, we will talk about one of this year's topics of the Global Forum: peace and trust. Do direct democracy tools have the potential to solve the conflincs? Join us to learn about historical precedents and discuss this topic!
• Lastly, on the last day of the Global Forum on Modern Direct Democracy, Clara and Raul will be presenting the first State of Direct Democracy Report. The report is aimed at presenting insights on direct democracy legal designs based on the findings from Direct Democracy Navigator.

More about the 2024 Global Forum on Modern Direct Democracy:
2024 will be a crucial year for democracy in Romania, with the European Union parliamentary elections just two weeks after the Forum and local and national elections later in the year. With this in mind, the 2024 Global Forum will centre its discussions on a critical issue: trust. Trust in institutions, media, and citizens is of essential importance to our democracies.
